i.e. 17th June 2009.
4. POLICE MATTERS
Sgt. Morag Montgomery from Community Police talked about Neighbourhood Reassurance which is an initiative coordinated by the police involving several agencies such as Land & Environmental Services; Glasgow Community Safety Services and Culture and Sport. She explained that Neighbourhood Reassurance targeted “hot-spots” with an interagency approach and a coordinated programme around the EPIC theme. (EPIC stands for Enforcement Prevention Intelligence and Communication). She sited two successful examples of EPIC in action, one in Springburn and the other in Maryhill.
Sgt. Montgomery then gave monthly crime figures:-
Monthly report: Crime figures for Lambhill:
18 crimes. 13 detected - 5 for drinking in public place; 2 breach of peace; 1 road traffic offence; 2 drug offences; 1 theft; 1 assault; 1 breach of bail.
5 undetected vandalisms.
Sgt. Montgomery invited questions. The following issues were raised:
(a) Allotments: Sgt. MM reported that a meeting had been arranged for 14th May between Community Police; Brodies (Solicitors) and Trustees re correct legal procedures for evicting the unauthorised users of the allotments. Community Police Donny Crilley and Martin McInnes are leading the initiative.
(b) Drug dealing in Knapdale St. Concern noted by Sgt. Montgomery.
(c ) 23 Kilfinnan St (burnt-out building): Sgt. Montgomery stated that this was an ongoing criminal investigation about which she could not comment.
(d) Lambhill Stables Community Gardens: Chair reported that containers had been broken into by means of a stihl saw but only a set of bolts had been stolen.
Stephen Egan, Acting Manager North, LES, talked about the role of LES within Neighbourhood Reassurance in relation to environmental issues ranging from dog fouling to street lighting, to roads and pavements, green spaces and vacant and derelict land.
Charlie Moone of Leisure and Sport talked about his work with young people, encouraging them to take up cycling and use the towpaths of the canal as a route to school and places to visit, like Kelvingrove art gallery and museum. He also reported work being done around the arena, otherwise known as MUGA (multi use games area) helping young people to organize themselves into teams and run their own tournaments.
At this point, Charlie Moone and Sgt. Montgomery left the meeting. Stephen Egan elected to stay.
5. KINGARTH HOUSE: Cllr Jim Mackechnie re-iterated to the meeting that plans were still being discussed around the future use of the area following the demolition of the existing building. This includes a learning disability hub; a doctors’ surgery; some element of sheltered housing for elderly people and even the unlikely possibility of a community swimming pool.
6. ALLOTMENT AREA: General discussion ensued and it was decided to invite Robert Watson of LES to the next meeting on June 17th. Main issues to be discussed are the effective clearance of the site and the re-establishment of allotment gardens for at least one/third of the overall site in accordance with the latest city plan, with the possibility of the remaining two/thirds also being used for allotments given that it is unlikely in the present economic climate that any building development will take place in the near future.
7. LAMBHILL STABLES: Chair reported that there was a proposed canal barge trip on Thursday 18th June 2009, 12-4pm which would be a professionally facilitated workshop to be filmed on the theme of Lambhill and District Local History and Heritage. Anyone who is interested in attending was invited to contact the Chair, although places were limited to 14 participants. The Chair pointed out that Lambhill Community Council had been funded by Canal Area Committee to sponsor the project - a DVD, a publication and 2 picnic benches with associated litter bins.
